MDP delays party elections yet again

After months of ‘it’s on, it’s off’, the MDP has yet again indicated that the much-awaited elections for senior party positions is once again ‘off’. While no clear reason was given for the postponement of the election, which was to be held this week, sources close to the party’s interim leadership told Hatharudhan ‘off the record’ that some differences in opinion were being ironed out before announcing what he said would be the firm date for the event.
The latest delay has angered some members, who have witnessed the disjointed management of the party leading to various hurdles over the past few months. “There are too many leaders and they are all jousting for the top post. Even Nasheed is still in the mix, as members of his household are still undermining members of the Valee Committee to maintain his head start in the dash to the finish line”, said one outspoken activists.
Since August, MDP has had to face a number of embarrassments and cracks in the Valee Committee have made it increasingly difficult for the party to project a unified stand. Following the stunt pulled on 12 August by Nasheed and Ahmed Abbas, the remaining members of the Committee kept a tight lip. Eventually, it was revealed that they had gone to the Maidhaan without the consent of the Committee. When the international community started pressurizing MDP for Sappe’s antics, they distanced themselves from DO! Needless to say that MDP’s claim that it has nothing to do with DO is one lie that even the most gullible Maldivian will not believe. The icing on the cake was the recent all-party gathering organized by the Law Commission. For the first two days, MDP not only participate in the meeting, they also give interviews to TVM! Then, on the third day, they don’t show up, and claim that they apparently never wanted to go, as they had ‘conditions’ to be fulfilled by the government.
All this is giving the Valee Committee a big headache, as reports are coming in that the international community has begun pressurizing MDP to have the leadership elections soon, and to get their act together by coming up with policies and democratic principles. Diplomatic sources have indicated that if these conditions are not fulfilled, they will have no choice but to believe the government’s view on MDP that it is a left-wing revolutionary movement with no intention of upholding democratic and liberal values.
So why are MDP trying to postpone the elections as much as possible? Simple! Everyone wants to be the leader, and the current nepotistic leading group is not ready to relinquish power to a bunch of newcomers like Dr. Waheed.
