DRP and MDP retain seats in the Special MajlisIt is ‘as you were’ in the Special Majlis (constitutional assembly) after the Commissioner of Elections announced the final results for the three seats up for grabs in Saturday's by-elections.
MDP retained both Male' (Nasheed) and Addu (Suood), traditional strongholds, while the DRP retained Shaviyani (Rameez). The composition of the assembly therefore remains unaffected, as will the political dynamics of the group. The DRP still controls the majority of both the Parliament and the constitutional assembly.
President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom convened the current Special Majlis in 2004 to amend the 1998 Constitution. It is driven by the Reform Agenda of 9 June 2004 set out by Gayoom.
