Analysts Say That Male’ Will Elect Usay

A recent telephone survey carried out by Miadhu News paper showed that Yoosuf Rafeeu (Usay), the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party’s (DRP) candidate for the upcoming by-election for the Male’ seat will win with ease.

In a recent article the news paper said that ‘72% of the people said that they would vote for Usay, while only a mere 11% said they would vote for Nasheed’ the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate. It is surprising that 13% remained undecided, while 4% said they would vote for other cadidates.

Usay is a well-loved TV comedian who produced, directed and acted in an all time favourite TV show called ‘Dhiriulhumakee miee ba’. “Usay has brought joy and laughter into our homes and we trust he will do a fine job in the Majilis” said Ismail Fulhu who owns a stall in the Local Market, at the “Baazaarumathi”. “We have known Usay for over 20 years, and trust he is on the right side, so he will definitely win” concluded Fulhu.

When olhuala.com asked him about “Kaanal” Nasheed, Mr Fulhu did not know who that was, and we dutifully informed him that “Kaanal” was the MDP candidate.

“Kaanal” Nasheed’s media websites, such as the Friends of Maldives’ (MDP’s International Wing) minivannews.com brand him as Colonel Nasheed. In actual fact he was not promoted over the rank of Private when he served in the NSS. “Kaanal” pronounced as colonel in Dhivehi language is a nickname Nasheed picked up while he was at school.

Several foreign observers have questioned MDP’s rationale behind backing “Kaanal” Nasheed as their candidate, as Nasheed is a rookie in the local community, politics aside. Nasheed has no formal education or experience in matters of the law, or the parliament.

Rafeeu (Usay) on the other hand has been involved in politics for a number of years. He stood for the Male’ seat before and managed to achieve third (two members elected) place once and also was elected for the special Majilis to represent Male' later. People believe that Usay is definitely going to be ‘lucky’ second time around. Luck aside, ‘it’s a sure thing’ concluded Miadhu News.
