DRP Public Meeting Underway with no Incidents Reported

S. Hithadhoo, Maldives, 12 Jan 2006, 10 PM (olhuala.com) – The Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party’s (DRP) much anticipated meeting got underway without incident at 9:15 PM tonight at the Muhibbudhdheen School premises. The auditorium was close to full capacity 10 minutes before the meeting commenced with recitation from the Noble Quran. Numbers were estimated to be well over 600.
The Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) rally meanwhile had not started at the advertised time of 9 PM. In fact, it had not started even by 9.50 PM with the work of ferrying supporters from neighbouring islands still ongoing.
The expected MDP harassment did not materialise, perhaps due to the partly inclement weather. Mausoom Hameed, 24, entering Muhibbudhdheen said: "It looked like we were going to have heavy rain tonight. It even drizzled. That's why the MDP thugs had no energy. 'Parteys' (local slang for drug addicts) are notorious for how easily they feel cold".
MDP members have reportedly made few preparations on how to conduct their illegal rally. "We were expecting the DRP to call off their show and then we could have had a victory party, with no agenda really. Then we decided to start our rally and then heckle the DRP meeting nearby with our speaker systems on full. But now the DRP meeting is underway yet our members have not even turned up yet", said our informer within the MDP's closed circle.
The MDP although it calims to have a large support base in the atoll, always has to ferry most of their attendees from other islands to the island of the meeting. In effect, they preach to the same individuals every single time they go to Addu.
Although their rally has not started yet, trouble is still possible once it does get underway. It is planned that they will air a video that supposedly shows police inflicted harm to members of the public in Fares-Maathoda. State television has repeatedly stated that the majority of injuries were suffered by the police.
Photos claiming to be of individual victims with injuries have been shown to be doctored hoaxes by the local news media and a number internet-news websites.
