munawar questioned
Munawwar Questioned At MDP MeetingDr Munawwar the former Attorney General of the Maldives, who is also a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership hopeful, faced a battery of questions during the recent MDP meeting held at Kalaafaanu School in Male’.
Munawwar was queried about his decision to prosecute the MDP interim chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Annie) on charges of theft.
Nasheed was subsequently convicted, and served a banishment sentence of 2 years. It was widely spread in various newspapers and websites at that time that Annie was in fact innocent and that he only ‘took something, which has been set for disposal as rubbish’.
Munnawar was asked this question directly by an MDP member from Male’. ‘Yes…what he did was not a crime…but I still sent his case to the courts’ was Maunawwar’s reply. The infuriated MDP member then asked whether Munawwar was acting on direct orders from the President to prosecute Annie, for political reasons. Munawwar’s reply has since started a number of conspiracy theories.
Munawwar’s reply: I can reveal the exact reason IF ANNIE HAS NO PROBLEM WITH ME REVEALING THE REASON.
It is very obvious to observers that Munawwar was coordinating with Annie even before he ‘officially’ joined the MDP. Miadhu Daily newspaper (incidently owned by Munawwar’s father-in-law) reported that ‘it was apparent to those who were present at the meeting, then and there that Annie and Munawwar had a pact. Annie was to be prosecuted for some minor incident for him to gain international acclaim as a freedom fighter, and a persecuted democracy activist’.
Annie has so far remained silent on this issue, and has not granted Munawwar his ‘blessing’ to reveal the actual reason behind their decision to prosecute Annie.
