MDP Congress: Waheed in secret talks with DRP

Sources in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership candidate Mohamed Waheed's camp have revealed that he is in negotiations with Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and government figures about his future.

The past few days has seen Waheed trying frantically to arrange telephone conversations with cabinet ministers, DRP MP's and even people at the President's Office. He is believed to be seeking contingencies in case he is defeated in the MDP leadership poll.

The MDP have always claimed a stance of 'non-engagement' with the government as well as the DRP although individual MDP members have continued to maintain links for personal reasons. However, for a senior official such as Waheed to be exposed in this situation is very damaging both for his credibility and for the MDP.

Waheed is currently in Male' after taking a serious gamble on his career. He resigned from his high profile job in the UN for the explicit purpose of 'taking over the helm of the MDP'. This role was guaranteed him by both Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) and temporary party chairman Mohamed Nasheed (Annie).

Developments since have however proved complicated. Ibra himself has cut all support and links with Waheed to run against him for the leadership and has launched a hate campaign against Waheed while Annie is too busy trying to work out a way out of being convicted of actions carried out in front of hundreds of people. (A further falling out had occurred between Annie and Waheed because Waheed had warned against Annie's plans for violence.)

According to Ibra's hate campaign, Waheed had earlier emigrated because of the offer of a comfortable life abroad and he had no interest in the welfare of the people. Ibra also implied that Waheed had been forced to resign from the UN because of the exposure of 'irregularities' in his activities while stationed in Afghanistan.

This latest revelation is a further blow to Waheed who has found himself under growing attack recently. Waheed has claimed that Ibra is in touch with the police and magistrates to ensure Annie remains underhouse arrest. Waheed still sees Annie as his biggest supporter.
