Gang incident ends peacefully in Male'

Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1745 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Crowds thinning out at both locations.

Chances of violence close to nil.

There is an MPS presence at both scenes.
It looks like the end of the gang scuffles for today.

There still are a few gang members near Jamaaludhdheen School.

The Henveiru gang remains ready.

MPS personnel on both locations are confiscating “weapons” such as knives and steel bars.

No confrontation between gangs and the police.

Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1615 Hrs (olhuala.com) – The leader of the mob assembled at the artificial beach (Henveiru) known as body Shah told olhuala.com “We will not go to Machchangolhi for a fight. We are standing our ground and are ready in the event that the Machchangolhi gang tries to attack us”.

Olhuala.com can confirm that both gangs are staying put at present.

Neither gang is moving.

It is fair to speculate that the incident will be resolved peacefully if neither gang makes a move.

Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1605 Hrs (olhuala.com) – olhuala.com can confirm that the rival gangs are assembling at two locations.


There is a mob of about 200 at the “Machchangolhi buru” near Kinaara tution class (Majeedhuge).

The other mob is at the artificial beach; numbers are reported to be around 30-50.

There is an MPS presence at both locations.


Eyewitnesses at the articificial beach report that gang members hid their weapons when MPS personnel arrived on the scene.

MPS sources inform olhuala.com that the police will not tolerate any violence and that swift action will be taken against individuals with any objects that can be considered weapons.

“This is like a fight scenario from a gang movie. Youths are armed with steel bars, clubs, knives and swords” said Saleem Najeeb an eyewitness at the Machchangolhi scene talking to olhuala.com via mobile phone.

MPS personnel on the scene has issued a warning stating that any individual wielding weapons will be arrested.


Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1540 Hrs (olhuala.com) – It is rumoured that one of the gangs found one of their members beaten up and thrown into a warehouse near the Maldives English School (MES) earlier today.

Hence this gang is launching a retaliatory attack on the rival gang.

Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1530 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Eyewitnesses report that gangs armed with clubs and steel bars were on the scene.

The Maldives Police Services, special riot control unit, Star Force personnel have arrived on the scene to intervene in any violence.

Male’, Maldives, 19 January 2006, 1520 Hrs (olhuala.com) – A crowd is gathering on the eastern side of Male'.

It looks like the second episode of the gang violence seen yesterday.

Unconfirmed reports say that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leaders intend to join crowds here in an effort to continue their "civil violence" campaign.
