MDP plan rampage through Male’; Male’ residents mobilise for self-defense

Male’, Maldives, 16th January 2006 2330 Hrs (olhuala.com) – The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership has called on its members to partake in further, violent demonstrations on the streets of Male’ tonight. The MDP leadership issued these orders to MDP members during the ongoing meeting at Imaadhudhdheen School.
“Our plan for tonight is foolproof. We will overwhelm the MPS [Maldives Police Services] and the NSS [National Security Service] tonight. We shall take ‘protestors’ to the Jumhooree Maidhaan, to Theemuge and the residence of the Commissioner of Police. We will not back down like Kaanal, we will use force if necessary” an MDP activist who identified himself as Seyboo, told olhuala.com.
Speakers including leader Ibrahim Ismail and vice president Ibrahim Zaki extolled a skewed version of events in Fares-Maathoda, Addu and Male’ over the past several days. These statements were designed to further enrage a dwindling support base reeling from recent set backs in Addu and Male’.
Concluding his talk, Ismail further ‘invited’ the hundreds of attendees for “dinner at my place tomorrow [17th January] night”. This is not the most subtle attempt by the MDP leader to raise a mob if things do not go according to plan tonight.
Other sources maintain that neighbourhood cooperation groups in Male’, fearing damage to people and property similar to that of August 2005, have responded to the rumours about the MDP’s plans for tonight by mobilising to stand in the way of any violent MDP activity. This is similar to the action taken by the citizens of Addu where they blocked the MDP’s attempts at running roughshod over people and property both public and private.
“We have had enough of this nuisance. We will stand no more of these acts by desperate people with nothing to loose. These gangs are made up of drug-afflicted youths and repeat criminals. The MDP is always fighting for the rights of criminals, not of the innocent majority. Now we stand up for ourselves”, said a Male’ resident getting material ready to board up his little storefront.
The MDP meeting is scheduled to break up soon. Be sure to check olhuala.com for an accurate commentary of events, as they unfold.
