Situation Remains calm in Male’, Incidents reported in Addu

Male', Maldives, 14th January 2006, 0330 Hrs (olhuala.com) – olhuala.com would like to clarify that the Mohamed Didi that rammed MPS personnel in S.Hithadhoo is not MDP shadow cabinet member MODI.

The Mohamed Didi who rammed the van is from Hithadhoo Island and is also known as Dhondhiyege Ibrahindhige Mohommaidhi

Male', Maldives, 14th January 2006, 0200 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Sources within the MDP inform olhuala.com, that MDP activists are regrouping for another onslaught in the morning.

The source told olhuala.com “the plan is to gather as many people as possible near the jetty area, to receive the team returning from Addu. Once the group arrives we will direct everyone to the Jumhooree Maidhaan to call for the resignation of key government people”.

The source also said “ brothers Ja [Banbukeyo Jaavid] and Hassan [Bambukeyo] were in charge of mobilising the MDP activists to the scene today”.

Hassan was later involved in a scuffle with activists he lured to the scene. One of the activists who identified himself as Mootey, told olhuala.com “Hassan promised us stuff [drugs] but when we came to the Maidhaan he refused to deliver”.

Addu Atoll, Maldives, 14th January 2006, 0115 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Olhuala.com’s Aishath Zeena reports that, the condition of the two Maldives Police Services (MPS) constables injured earlier remains critical.

The two constables sustained serious injuries when a van driven by MDP’s Mohamed Didi rammed into them.

“Instead of stopping at the police checkpoint, Mohomma [Didi] hit the police formation head on. He ran them over, and drove off” said eyewitness Abdulla Muraadh while speaking with olhuala.com’s Aishath Zeena.

MDP shadow cabinet member Maria Ahmed Didi is enroute to Male’ at present.


Addu Atoll, Maldives, 14th January 2006, 0015 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Olhuala.com’s Aishath Zeena reports that, the MDP’s Ibrahim Shareef (Mavota) was taken into Maldives Police Services (MPS) custody a short while ago.

Zeena reports that, Shareef was detained for questioning as the MDP’s Mohamed Didi, who rammed MPS personnel earlier, with his van has stated that he did it on direct orders from Shareef.

It is also reported that, some of the MDP officials that arrived on Thursday will depart for Male’ on an Island Aviation flight shortly. The rest of the delegation is expected to fly back at 0500 Hrs.

Male', Maldives, 13th January 2006, 2330 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Olhuala.com can confirm that the Maldivian Police Services (MPS) did not arrest Mohamed Nasheed (also known as Kaanal, Member of Special Majilis) after the incidents at the Maidhaan earlier this evening.

Nasheed left MPS HQ at 2305 Hrs.

“Nasheed was taken into the Hussain Adam Building for his own safety” confirmed a source within the MPS.

Nasheed, is reportedly at his home at present.

Addu Atoll, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 2230 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Olhuala.com’s Aishath Zeena reports that a van driven by MDP member Mohamed Didi rammed, and injured six Maldives Police Service constables at around 2145 Hrs, on Seenu Atoll Hithadhoo Island. Mohamed Didi is still at large. Hithadhoo residents are helping the MPS in an effort to locate him.

Zeena also reported that a police van has been set on fire by MDP activists, in front of the MDP offices in Seenu Atoll Maradhoo Island at approximately 2205 Hrs. MPS personnel have arrived on the scene.

Male', Maldives, 13th January 2006, 21:45 Hrs (olhuala.com) – The situation in Male’ has returned to normalcy. Shoppers have returned to Ahmadhee and Majeedhee Bazaars and the S.T.O Trade Centre.

The Jumhooree Maidhaan is clear.

All roads are clear.

Fights between MDP thugs and Male’ residents were reported at the S.T.O Trade Centre at 2120 Hrs. Several residents managed to break up the fight.

It is confirmed that Kaanal Nasheed, is indeed at the Shaheedh Hussain Adam Building.

Zuhair Izwaan, an eyewitness at the scene told olhuala.com “Kaanal was being attacked by angry residents of Male’ when riot police intervened and escorted him from the scene”.

It is unclear whether Kaanal Nasheed has been arrested or formally charged. Sources within the MPS tell olhuala.com “He [Kaanal] was brought in at the time, to protect him from the angry residents, it is our responsibility to protect all Maldivian citizens”.

S.Hithadhoo, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 9:15 PM (olhuala.com) – The situation in Addu remains normal.

An incident occurred at around 2:00 PM local time. Some unknown persons removed the aluminium sheets covering the roof of the MDP offices of Hithadhoo from the inside and started bombarding the adjacent building (Maldives Police Services Station in Hithadhoo) with rocks, stones and firebombs.

MPS constables arrived at the MDP offices, and were met with a gang of 20 youths armed with iron bars.

They resisted arrest, but have been taken into custody.

Male’, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 2100 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Jumhooree Maidhaan is now clear, all Male’ residents and MDP thugs have left the scene.

Unconfirmed reports say some MDP thugs have been arrested.

Kaanal Nasheed no where to be seen, unconfirmed reports say that he has been taken in to the Hussain Adam Building, olhuala.com will verify this information shortly.

Reports coming in from other locations in Male’ that, angry residents are confronting MDP thugs on the streets. Reports say that several fights have broken out at various locations.

It is confirmed that Mohamed Nasheed (Annie), the Chairman of the MDP is still at his house, and is safe.

Male’, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 2030 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Several hundred Male’ residents who have been fed up with the MDP’s antics arrived on the scene at about 2014 local time.

Male’ residents confronted the MDP and called on Kaanal Nasheed to resign immediately, without delay.

MDP gangs attacked residents and it is reported that fighting broke out on the scene at this point.

Several on-lookers left the scene as the MDP thugs wielding weapons such as knifes and sharp objects threatened to beat up anyone who got in their way.

Riot police have intervened to break up the fight.

The MDP’s backup did not materialse.

The MDP have found out that the residents of Male’ will not tolerate such violent demonstrations.

Male’, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 2000 Hrs (olhuala.com) – Situation is stable. The MDP crowd are just on the “Helipad area” of the Jumhooree Maidhaan, and their numbers are not more than 500.

“We are expecting a lot more people” said Ibrahim Rasheed, an MDP member present at the scene. “It seems that they are being delayed” Rasheed told olhuala.com reporters at the scene.

It is widely rumoured among onlookers present at the Maidhaan, that the MDP support will not materialise.

The Maldives Police Services (MPS), in a surprising move have pulled back, and there are no MPS personnel in the Maidhaan itself. There are a couple of constables on the “Rasmee Faalan” (Presidential Jetty).



Male’, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 1930 Hrs (olhuala.com) – The numbers present at the Jumhooree Maidhaan remains constant, at about 500.

Kaanal Nasheed is continuosly on the phone urging people to come out.

The crowd is behaving in an orderly fashion so far. They have not yet started shouting slogans.

The Maldives Police Services (MPS) have just issued a warning to everyone present to leave the Jumhooree Maidhaan peacefully.

Male’, Maldives, 13th January 2006, 1900 Hrs (olhuala.com) – A mob of about 500 has materialised at the “Jumhooree Maidhaan”. It is reported that the crowd consists largely of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members. It is believed that this crowd is the MDP’s official welcoming party, to receive the humiliated MDP team returning from Addu

Mohamed Nasheed (also known as Kaanal, member of special majilis for Male’) is leading the welcoming committee.

The Maldives Police Services (MPS) vehicles on the scene are urging the crowd to disperse.
