DRP delegation safely back in Male’
By Ismail Rifau, Political Correspondent

Male’, Maldives, 15th January 2006 (olhuala.com) – Dr. Hassan Saeed and Uz. Mohamed Jameel are in Male’. The duo debriefed DRP members on their visit to Addu Atoll and Fuahmulah and described the trip as an ‘uninhibited success’. They arrived back at Hulhule airport at 11.50 PM on the 14th of January.
MDP activists had planned to prevent the departure of the delegation from Gan Airport and had proclaimed ‘the DRP delegation will be prevented from leaving by the people of Addu Atoll’ on their clandestine websites.
“This is in retaliation for the DRP’s prevention of our vice-president’s [Ibrahim Zaki] departure last night”, Ali Mufeed, a known MDP activist in S. Hithadhoo told olhuala.com.
Activists wearing the characteristic “MDP thug uniforms” arrived at Gan Airport in an effort to stop the delegation from boarding the Island Aviation flight to Hulhule’. Maldives Police Services (MPS) constables on the scene informed people arriving at the airport that only persons who were travelling were allowed to enter the airport for safety reasons. DRP members and well-wishers who endeavoured to bid farewell to the Male’ delegation were also informed of these security measures and were not allowed to enter the airport.
The MDP thugs confronted MPS constables in an effort to storm into the airport, and failed.
Analysts state that the MDP has committed ‘political suicide’ over the past few weeks, by calling for their “civil violence” campaign. This is seen as a last ditch attempt by the MDP to regain their fast eroding legitimacy. This has been accelerated by the stunning defeats suffered in Addu, Male’ and Fuvahmulah in the recent few days.
A political analyst says: “The MDP is trying to sustain a militant movement fired by frenzied revolutionary ideals. MDP activists are reminiscent of the Hitler Youth. This is something that, in principle, will last only a short while. History has shown that. So the MDP feel that they have to get results fast or they will never be able to achieve their goal of dislodging the incumbent government. The MDP’s failure is becoming ever more likely with each passing day.”
The returning delegation was met at no. 1 Jetty in Male’ by a welcoming party of about 30 grass roots DRP activists and about four MDP national council members sent from their ongoing meeting at Imadhudhdheen School. The flight from Addu also carried two MDP leaders: MP Mohamed Aslam and Special Majlis Member Husnu Suood.
