vain antics
Readers Comment :Vain Antics by Ibra to Cling on to Power: You Will Lose!
Less than a fortnight after Ibra stole the MDP election, it has become evident that Ibra will do anything to cling on to power. He was elected as MDP leader under mysterious circumstances, which Waheed believes were not fair. Undeniably, there is a huge legitimacy issue that Ibra has to handle and ensure that MDP does not break over the crisis brought about by his trickery in cheating Waheed of his well-deserved win.
Ibra's goons had always argued that Ibra should be chosen over Waheed because the party required a hardliner to topple the regime. Ibra argued that Waheed was too much of a gentlmen to "rock the dhorni" hard enough to capsize it. MDP wanted someone to shake up the apple tree.
Naturally, Ibra has set himself a hardline mandate. This is a major mistake for both Ibra and MDP. They are on a path to self-destruction. Their narcissism has eventually got the better of them.
Ibra has pledged a new government by June 2005! Tall order. But if he does not attain it, Ibra will be replaced by Waheed, and MDP will split between moderates and hardliners. The hardliners will be utterly discredited and Waheed will emerge as an alternative future.
This will greatly disappoint Sikka as Waheed is more likely to collaborate with Gayoom in consolidating democratic reform. This means Sikka will not get his resorts. In fact, things have got so badly strained, Sikka has stopped his monthly payments to Waheed. Instead, Waheed's new financial patron is Mrs Aishath Rasheed of Karankaage, a woman who owns half of the land in Male. These properties were bought at dirt cheap prices when her father was the Home Minister under President Nasir. Her only quid pro quo is that Waheed does not institute land reform whereby she will have to give up her misappropriated properties in the congested Male. Ibra's supporters, the Dhaftharu (landless) Maoists, want that land from Mrs Rasheed.
Ibra began by instigating the hostage taking incident in Fares-mathoda on New Year's Day. He followed it up by creating hysteria over nothing when the police made one arrest. Then he launched his Addu violence campaign and the Male uprising, both of which fizzled out. Ibra and Anni fought bitterly over Ibra's incompetence and poor commitment to the hardline cause, and Ibra agreed to a more organised direct action campgain. Hence the actions planned for 20 January.
The DRP should be happy with the frenzy of acitivity that MDP are planning. These are death convulsions of MDP; not the rise of a new party. Convulsions that arise from Ibra's megalomania and Anni's narcissism- that only they know what is right and that the people love them.
A big surprise is in store for them. Like Che Guevara, Ibra will be exposed as a nuisance and ostracised. Ibra is getting caught between a rock and a hard place- on the one hand, DRP is just beginning to spring into action, and they obviously have real popular support. People power will oppose the economic and social disruption that Ibra is calling for. They will despise the economic greed that is behind MDP. On the other hand, Waheed's faction will ensure that Ibra fails. Waheed may be nice, but he has the support of nasty brutes like Ilyas Hussain, Naushad and other street fighters. And, Mrs. Rasheed will not let Ibra win and turn her landless and penniless.
People genuinely hate Ibra's rudness and crudeness, while many love Waheed's more refined personality.
Ibra, your number is up. You are digging your own grave. Nobody can start a major public campaign, fighting on two fronts-- both the people power and Waheed! You can't make the society pay for all the taunts that they had delivered to you over the years! You need psychological help, Ibra. Nobody will arrest you this time. You will find that the courts are a hard match for you. Don't destroy the nation with your psychotic madness.
