Speaking via mobile phone from a private room at the ADK hospital, he expressed surprise at the comments made by the MDP big guns who visited him and the other victims his brother Hassan and MDP cell vice president Shiruhaan.
Q: How are you?
A: I am as well as can be expected. I think I was lucky. I have injuries to my head, hands and foot. I was trying to defend myself after I stepped into defend Shiruhaan.
Q: What happened to Shiruhaan?
A: He has a 12-inch wound when a box-cutter was scraped down his abdomen. He was bleeding profusely when he was brought here.
Q: Who attacked you?
A: A gang led by Rabarey [Razeen] of H. Hundred Flowers. They all had cutters and iron bars.
Q: Is Razeen a DRP member. Does he have links to the DRP?
A: Razeen signed for the MDP last year along with most of us. He was involved with putting up Kaanal's posters in Male' along with a lot of the Kuda Henveiru gang. Someone said he helped DRP's Yoosay in his campaign, but I don't think he had any time given he was always with us.
Q: What was the argument about?
A: A girl. These things happen but they don't always get this bad.
Q: Who visited you?
A: Zaki, Mavota, Falah, Shiuna and too many people. I didn't know what was going on. The doctor was trying to keep them away but they forced themselves into the emergency area.
Q: What did they ask you?
A: They did not ask me anything! They started telling me what I had to say. They had a version of events. I heard a lot of "DRP, DRP, Maumoon, Adam Zahir, etc." but I didn't know what they were talking about. I was asking people how Hassan was but no one told me.
They have placed people in my room to 'look after me'. I have asked them to leave, telling them I am fine by myself. But they refuse to leave unless I have to go to the toilet.
Q: Has any other political party contacted you?
A: No. Why should they?
Hussain has a history of drug addiction and has been convicted several times. He was seen as a loyal supporter of Ibra but the MDP's attempt to exploit his suffering may see him question the wisdom of this allegiance.
Male’, Maldives, 2155 Hrs (olhuala.com) – ADK hospital and its environs are presently closed for vehicular traffic as MDP's Addu Atoll MP Mavota Shareef continues his efforts to politicise the gang-violence related stabbing incidents of this afternoon. Mavota, along with MDP vice president Ibrahim Zaki arrived at the ADK hospital where the victims were taken shortly after the events.
Shareef spoke with the crowd gathered at the entrance and in the courtyard of ADK hospital: "These men were not afforded the protection of the Maldives Police Services. Only a select group of people get police protection." These comments echo the stance the MDP has taken in recent days. Many have identified this as an attempt to create animosity between the police and the masses.
At present, around 200 people are waiting in the vicinity of the hospital. Among these are MDP thugs such as Maakun Falaah, a man with multiple convictions for drug possession, trafficking and for grievous bodily harm.
Further reports, which cannot yet be confirmed by olhuala.com, state that a similar sized crowd is mobile through the streets of Male'.
Gangland knifings and violence have markedly increased since the call for 'civil unrest' in the Maldives by the MDP. Further, it is unclear what Mr. Shareef meant by "police protection" as no Maldivian expects the drug afflicted among the population to have any special protection.
His comments also contradict other official statements made by the MDP claiming that the attackers had ties to the DRP. The DRP had confidently denied any link to the alleged perpetrators.
Stabbing victim Shiruhaan, whose injuries are mostly superficial according to hospital sources conversed with Shareef and Zaki at length. Shiruhaan, vice-president of an MDP Kuda Henveiru neighbourhood was attacked by a rival MDP cell with allegiance to the Munavvar faction within the party. MDP leaders are in ADK hospital.
Olahual.com has uncovered new information on the incident.
MDP cell vice president Shiruhaan was stabbed by a member of a rival MDP cell - Razeen, also known as Rabarey. Inside sources in the DRP registrar's office stated that Razeen was at no time a member of the DRP. Rabarey led the attack on the Vili Fulus in September 2003
It is widely known in Male' that Rabarey is part of a Kuda Henveiru Gang also registered as an MDP cell that was actively involved in campaigning for the MDP's candidate Kaanal Nasheed in the recent Male' by election for the Special Majlis.
"Rabarey was working with us in putting up Kaanal's posters in Kuda Henveiru as well as in Machchangolhi [ward]. He is one of us and we're all signed up for the MDP since October last year when their leadership came up with some offers for us", a member of Rabarey's gang told olhuala.com.
"This whole stabbing incident has been brewing up for several days now. It started with a slight on a girl, someone's sister, made by Shiruhaan. Rabarey has some friends in the police, but I don't think they are in influential positions; there is no possibility that he will escape from justice", he concluded.
Male’, Maldives, 1845 Hrs (olhuala.com) – The gang assembled at the Red Zanzibar Café’ is nowhere to be seen.
It has further emerged that 3 persons were stabbed.
Sources who wish to remain anonymous inform olhuala.com that the gang will “attack” the rival gang sometime tonight, if the Police are unable to arrest the perpetrators.
“Brothers Hussain, Hassan and Shirhaan of H. Morning Sun were stabbed by the man who led the attack [on] the Villi Fulus [community police station] near Fini Park on the 19th of September 2003” said a resident from the area who is better known as Ammadey.
MDP officials including Ibrahim Zaki and Aathif (X-ray) have arrived at ADK hospital, and have met the victims' families. A source that overheard the conversations told olhuala.com “Zaki asked them [victims' families] who they were and whether they were MDP supporters. Zaki went on to tell them that he was sure that DRP members backed by the Police Commissioner himself carried out this violence. He also asked them to say that if anyone asked”.
Olhuala.com reporters spoke to one of the victim’s family afterwards, and the victim’s brother told olhuala.com “I don’t think this is political. He [the victim] has been involved in this sort of gang activity for sometime. We have been telling him that this sort of thing will eventually happen, if he associated with such people. Accusing the police commissioner is absurd”.
Male’, Maldives, 1800 Hrs (olhuala.com) – A violent situation is developing on the eastern waterfront of the capital Male’.
Olhuala.com can confirm beyond any doubt that this incident is not political.
A local ‘gang’ member of Kuda Henveiru was stabbed at around 1430 Hrs, by two members of another Henveiru gang, resulting in a stand off between the two gangs.
The Kuda Henveiru group has assembled in front of the artificial beach, near the Red Zanzibar Café’. A local who identified himself as Riya told olhuala.com “these struggles between the two gangs have been going on for years. This is not political. I think this is a war between two drug barons”.
The Kuda Henveiru group has demanded, the police arrest the two individuals who are believed to have carried out the stabbing. They will take matters into their own hands if the police do not make the arrests within the hour.
