Zaki embroiled in sleazy family scandal
Moonisa Easa, Political Analyst

Male’, Maldives, 7th February 2006 (www.olhuala.com) – Hamdhan Zaki, son of MDP vice president Ibrahim Zaki, was taken to hospital yesterday with a self-inflicted knife wound. He was later discharged by doctors who reported his injury as superficial and typical of patients with attention-seeking disorders. A video of the stricken victim shows a relative scarcity of bleeding from the 4-inch long wound on his back.

It has emerged that Hamdhan had allegedly raped and beaten his ex-wife the previous night while intoxicated. The matter has now been reported to the police who have since interviewed the woman as well as witnesses.

Allegations have also surfaced that the injury to Hamdhan was caused by a revenge attack by his ex-wife’s brother Ahmed Shahid Saabe of Sisil Faru, another prominent MDP official. He is known to control a group of ex-convicts and was highly active in the MDP’s failed demonstration of 24th January. Both he and Hamdhan were also implicated in the fire-bombing and violent unrest in Male' in August 2005.

With a history of wife-beating, unfaithfulness and failed marriages, Hamdhan, not unlike his father, has never been far from controversy. He has attempted suicide on more than one occasion, and was dishonourably discharged from the National Security Service for one such attempt in front of a number of people.

A close friend of Hamdhan’s told olhuala.com via telephone: “[His ex-wife] was granted a divorce two weeks ago by the courts even though Hamdhan did not want it. The last straw was when Hamdhan had [relations] with Folhi Siththi’s daughter [a neighbour] when his wife was on a recent trip to Sri Lanka. He had earlier been involved in several similar escapades, even with his first wife Yumna with whom he has an elder daughter.

“At about 1.00 o’clock on Monday morning, Hamdhan started ringing his ex-wife’s residence asking her to come to his place to settle outstanding issues about their daughter after the divorce. Although told by her relatives not to, she visited him at that hour. It was four hours later that her mother received a call.

The family arrived to find Hamdhan’s ex-wife in a state of great distress, and left out on the street. “She was wearing a black T-shirt, not the clothes she had been wearing before.” The friend described what had happened: “When [the ex-wife] entered, there was Hamdhan along with one other man and both were really drunk. The other man was asked to leave. Hamdhan then proceeded to tear off her clothes and beat her brutally.

“He also took photos of her in a state of undress saying: “I’m going to put these on the internet as revenge.” Despite her struggling and calls for help, he then raped her.”

That she had been raped and beaten was confirmed by Dr. Naashida, who was on duty at the IGM Hospital at the time. Coincidentally, Dr. Nashida is related to the ex-wife and did not feel it was appropriate for her to file a report to the police. When Hamdhan was brought into the hospital observation room in the afternoon, the attending Dr. Salih (husband of Dr. Naashida) was able to assess the situation and promptly asked the matter to be reported to the police.

Mr. Zaki visited his son in hospital along with several members of the MDP. At first, rumours were spread over the MDP media machine alleging this had been a politically motivated attack. However the gimmick quickly petered out as soon as the identities of the victims became known.

Hamdhan was soon discharged and is thought to be convalescing at home. Neither he, nor his father was available for comment.
