Waheed jostled and spat at by Ibra supporters Supporters of Ibra shouted at and spat in the direction of losing leadership rival Mohamed Waheed outside the congress hall.
Waheed made a quick exit from the congress hall once the results were declared. He was followed out by about a dozen people who were joined by a group waiting outside. They proceeded to shout insults, push and shove Waheed as he made his way to a waiting car. "You mercenary. You do not have any right to a position within MDP. Go back to where you came from!" were some of the comments heard by onlookers.
Earlier, Waheed, sensing his fate after the first round of voting, was seen to make continuous phone calls. Some maintain he had a role in getting Annie to attend - as a last resort in his failing bid.
Waheed sees even the vice presidency is beneath him. His next step is keenly awaited, as at this moment it seems his future is in ruins.
He had given up a promising diplomatic career for a leadership role in local politics. His lack of understanding of the Maldivian political scene due to his long and comfortable exile abroad has proved fatal.
