Nasheed violates bail conditions as he masterminds MDP's violence
Moonisa Easa, Political Analyst

Male’, Maldives, 21st January 2006 (olhuala.com) – Mohamed Nasheed (Annie), the Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is directing the violent activities which have plagued the capital Male' for the past few days in defiance of bail conditions set while he awaits trial for sedition and crimes against the state. Under these conditions set by the judge and to which his attorneys gave their consent, Annie has pledged to refrain from any 'violent, disruptive or inflammatory activity' as he awaits trial under house arrest.

Bail was set under the admonition that if any of these are violated he will be returned to custody. Sources inform olhuala.com that the authorities are keeping a watchful eye on the comings and goings at M. Yaagoothuge where he is resident.

The past few days has seen some meetings of the MDP shadow cabinet take place at this address in the presence of Nasheed. “Because these meetings have called for 'civil disobedience' or 'public violence' resulting in vandalism, blocking of traffic, disturbing the peace and other violent crimes, it is clear that Annie is in violation of some of the terms of bail” said one of our sources within the Attorney General’s office, who wished to remain unnamed.

However, the authorities are expected not to take Annie into custody, but rather the prosecution is expected to produce this evidence in trial. Also, the judge is expected to find Annie in contempt of his court and take appropriate measures. The disclosures come amid rumours that Annie's trial is set to commence on the 25th of this month although an official statement to this effect has not yet been made.

The MDP, after yesterday afternoon's shadow cabinet meeting at Annie's address, have called for mass countrywide protests and strikes on the 24th, seemingly to deflect attention from the trial and evidence which is to be presented against the party's chairperson.
