Moosa Court Case Update

The court case against the chief editor and owner of the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) clandestine website dhivehiobserver.com Ahmed Shafeeg Ibrahim Moosa (Sappe) of Maafusheege, Male’, goes on in his absence in the Maldives.

This afternoon, the court saw evidence presented by the prosecution lawyers. The evidence was in the form of receipts, IOUs signed by Moosa himself and bank transfer records. The next trial date is said to be the 31st of January 2006.

If convicted, it is believed that Moosa’s house the above named Maafusheege will be sold by the banks, in order to pay Moosa’s creditors.

Moosa left the country in a hurry, in September 2003, and resides in Scotland at present in an effort to avoid conviction of defrauding a number of lenders. Moosa, allegedly owes a total of approximately US$ 560,000 (five hundred and sixty thousand United States Dollars) to several parties.

Abdulla Jaabir, a well-known hotelier informed olhuala.com that Moosa owed him a ‘considerable’ amount of money. ‘Sappe’ thinks discrediting the government through spreading slanderous lies will mean that he does not have to pay up. If he is dumb enough to think that, he has another thing coming. We will hunt him down wherever he is, no matter who is in government as I do not intend to be cheated out of my hard earned money’ added Maniku, another wealthy hotelier seeking repayments from Moosa.
